Canada 1947 Five-Cent Coin (Maple Leaf) This is a 1947 "Maple Leaf" Canadian 5-cent coin. The small maple leaf stamped right next to the "7" in the date is one of the most famous and unique design markers in Canadian coin history. It tells a fascinating story about global politics and an emergency solution at the Royal Canadian Mint. The Explanation: India's Independence Crisis The small maple leaf indicates that this coin was minted in 1948, not 1947.Here is exactly why it was placed there: The Political Shift: In August 1947, India officially gained independence from the British Empire. The Coinage Problem: The front (obverse) of all Canadian coins featured the profile of King George VI surrounded by Latin text that included ET IND: IMP:, which translates to "King and Emperor of India". Because he was no longer the Emperor of India, this inscription had to be removed immediately for the 1948 production run. The Mint's Delay: The Royal Mint in London was responsible for creating the updated 1948 master dies omitting the title, but they were severely delayed in shipping them to Ottawa. The Emergency Workaround: Canada desperately needed new nickels in early 1948 but could not legally produce coins with the outdated "Emperor" title under a 1948 date. To bypass this, the Mint reused the old 1947 reverse dies, but hand-punched a tiny maple leaf next to the 7. This mark served as an official mint notification that the coin was struck in 1948.
