Just like the 1953 and 1965 nickels, 1996 is highly prized by collectors because the Royal Canadian Mint subtly adjusted the spacing of the digits in the date mid-year. This mechanical shift created three highly distinct varieties with vastly different collector values. Meaning of "Far 6" vs. "Near 6" The distinction lies in the exact alignment and positioning of the final digit "6" relative to the number "9" that sits directly before it. Near 6: The final "6" is placed very tightly against the first "9." It looks crowded, and the top curved tail of the "6" sits incredibly close to the body of the preceding digit. Far 6 (Scarce Variety): The final "6" is positioned with a distinct, noticeable gap separating it from the "9". The entire date looks evenly spaced across the bottom curve of the rim.
