Displays nicely Very light age/use wear Silkscreen artists Hans, Peter, and Traudl Markgraf participated in several reproduction programs to promote Canadian art after they immigrated to Canada from Germany in the mid-1950s. The Markgrafs developed a silkscreen process noted for its printing quality and its faithfulness to the original painting. The National Gallery of Canada became involved with the Markgrafs in the mid-1950s when Montreal collector and philanthropist Sidney Dawes introduced then Gallery director Alan Jarvis to the work of the Markgrafs. A collector of the work of James Wilson Morrice, Dawes arranged for the reproduction of Morrice's work, the production of which he financed. The National Gallery also arranged for the Markgrafs to reproduce works by seven other artists from its collection, financed by the Queen's Printer in Ottawa. In 1959, the Markgraf brothers and the Gallery produced a series of "Tom Thomson and Group of Seven" pochoir (silkscreen) prints. Following their partnership with the National Gallery in 1960, the Markgrafs continued on their own, with Hans leaving Canada for Germany and Peter partnering with Artistica, a Montreal-based publisher and distributor of fine art prints, books, and cards. In 1967, the Canada Council partnered with Peter Markgraf to produce prints that focused on contemporary Canadian art. Following this project, the Markgrafs continued to print work for private clients under "Editions Markgraf". In 1977, the Markgrafs moved to Vancouver to work for Bill Ellis of Canadian Native Prints Ltd. They continued to print for individual artists and after 1978, created their own silkscreens of west coast scenery that were later reproduced as lithographs. In the United Nations year of International Cooperation, the Markgrafs printed four Jamaican paintings through Robie Kidd. The Markgraf Collection consists of 88 prints from the Markgraf series of works by the following artists: Edmund Alleyn, Marcel Barbeau, Maxwell Bennett Bates, Leon Bellefleur, B.C. Binning, R.L. Bloore, Molly Lamb Bobak, Paul-Emile Borduas, Sam Borenstein, Claude Breeze, Kittie Bruneau, Jack Bush, Franklin Carmichael, Ulysse Comtois, Stanley Cosgrove, Graham Coughtry, Maurice Galbraith Cullen, Greg Curnoe, John Dunkley, Brian Fisher, John Richard Fox, Yves Gaucher, Lawren Harris, E.J. Hughes, Albert Huie, Jacques Hurtubise, A.Y. Jackson, Patrick Alfred Landsley, Gary Lee-Nova, Jean-Paul Lemieux, Arthur Lismer, Kenneth Lochhead, J.E.H. Tory, Claude Tousignant, Harold Town, Frederick Horsman Varley, Barrington Watson, and Joyce Wieland. Hughes remarkable career as an artist, spans 70 years and encompasses his work as a gifted printmaker, successful muralist, outstanding Canadian war artist and prolific painter. His paintings depict land, sea and small moments of daily life with a rare clarity and vividness. Hughes has a distinguished reputation for work underscored by a passion for the beauty of the west coast of Canada. “Hughes is at his best depicting British Columbia’s unique beauty”, said Ian Thom. “Hughes has a deep affection for the British Columbian landscape and a vision that is unmistakably his own.” Despite the changing face of the visual arts, Hughes has remained steadfast in his exploration of a unique and personal approach to realism. The artist’s distinct style, marked by the use of flattened space, skewed perspective and simplified shapes, defies parallels with other artists or easy categorization within artistic genres. https://ejhughes.ca Measurements: 27.5" x 24" Pickup category timeslot {A}
