2 hardcover books & 3 magazines. The fully-annotated illustrations include 108 marks and 119 photographs of specimens selected to show typical products of many of the potters during the 70 years covered by the book. Essential to collectors of Stafford-shire Blue, the book will appeal equally to the trans-Atlantic connoisseurs who have always valued the ware on account of its many reproductions of American scenes. HISTORY OF THE STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERIES (1829) by Simeon Shaw This account of the development of the Staffordshire pottery industry was written shortly after the remarkable changes it had undergone in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries under the influence of Wedgwood, Turner and Spode. Simeon Shaw based his work on the reminiscences of those who had worked in the industry during these years. Fully conscious that he was recording information that would have otherwise been lost, he set down techniques of manufacture, the composition of clays, and methods of decoration, as well as biographical notes on the most notable potters. Here is a study which will be of much interest to both the industrial historian, and the antiques collector. It has attraction too for those concerned with the history and topography of the area, for nearly a third of the book is devoted to describing the environment of this important new industry.
