Doner.<div><br></div><div><span style"font-size: 1rem; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Artist Bio:</span><br><div>A true mid-century futurist, Howard Philip Seiss Doner (1909-1985) patented ‘multi-functional furniture’ including the sofabed, among other functional lighting and art-integrated pieces for the home, even designing housing communities with built-in recycling services, long before it was part of everyday life.
A born entrepreneur, 'HPD' founded several businesses, including his namesake, Doner Gallery in Whitby. With a background in merchandise display from Sears Roebuck in Chicago, he also owned a National Display Centre, designing and fabricating retail fixtures.
Designing furniture was a passion, and he partnered with Sklar in the 1950s, personally earning the National Design Award in furniture design in both 1954 and 1956. In 1967 he was presented with the Ontario Design Award in furniture design.
All the while, he consistently painted artwork, represented by peers in the furniture and design industry as well as galleries in Paris, San Francisco and Tel Aviv. His works have hung in numerous corporate and condominium collections, Ottawa’s Parliament Buildings, and countless homes, where they are still treasured, nearly a century later.

He studied under under William Brymner, Maurice Cullen and Edmond Dyonnet at the Art Association of Montreal. He worked in the stained glass industry for eleven years, making drawings for ornaments and figures and then as an illustrator for La Presse and the Montreal Star doing pen and ink drawings. Caron eventually turned to painting old buildings of Montreal and Quebec City and rural scenes in the Laurentians. Winterscapes were his specialty, and many were reproduced as cards. He exhibited at Royal Canadian Academy, the Ontario Society of Artists, the Art Association of Montreal and the Fine Arts Section of the Canadian National Exhibition. Caron won the Jessie Dow prize for watercolours in 1931 and again in 1937. He was a member of the Pen and Pencil Club, Montreal; The Arts and Letters Club, Montreal; The Canadian Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers; The Canadian Society of Graphic Art and and the Royal Canadian Academy. His works are held in collections including the National Gallery and the Museum of the Province of Quebec.<br><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</div></div>

ELIZABETH M. GRIEVE
This is believed to be a charcoal sketch of Elizabeth Grieve, the wife of John Campbell. She was born in 1849, in Galt, Ontario. She and John had only two children, William Edgar and Helen Elizabeth. They farmed, Lot 6 Concession XI, Mornington Township, Perth County. Elizabeth Grieve Campbell died on July 12, 1929 and is buried in Stratford Cemetery. Her husband, John Campbell, a son of William Campbell of County Tyrone, Ireland, was born on March 19, 1851 and died on December 5, 1948 and is also buried in the same cemetery.
This picture was commissioned by John Campbell of Burns, Ontario in 1901, and it is believed to be Elizabeth at age 51-52.
Re-framed by R. W. C. Barrett their great grandson in November, 1995<br></div>
