This is an original lobby card from the movie Sombrero. It is card 8 from a set of 8 that would have hung in the theater to promote the movie. It is in good vintage condition as seen in the photos. It has staple holes from where it was hung. Sombrero (1953) is a Technicolor romantic drama from MGM, directed by Norman Foster and based on Josefina Niggli’s book Mexican Village. Set in rural Mexico, the film interweaves three distinct love stories against the backdrop of tradition, family honor, and social barriers. The first storyline follows Alejandro Castillo (Ricardo Montalbán), the son of a proud family, who falls in love with the humble and beautiful Eufemia Calderón (Pier Angeli). Their romance faces strong resistance due to class differences and long-standing feuds between their families. In the second tale, artist Pepe González (Vittorio Gassman) is caught between his carefree, wandering spirit and his passionate love for the spirited Maria (Yvonne De Carlo). Their relationship is marked by emotional turbulence and a struggle between freedom and commitment. The third plot centers on Ruben (Rick Jason), an American who falls for the alluring Lola (Cyd Charisse), a local dancer known for her beauty and independence. Their story brings a cross-cultural dimension to the film, highlighting the clash between local customs and foreign ideals. As the narratives unfold, the characters confront issues of identity, loyalty, and the constraints of tradition. Each story moves through its own arc of tension and resolution, culminating in a finale that ties the threads together through celebration and reconciliation during a local festival. The film is notable for its rich Mexican setting, vibrant costume design, and dance sequences—especially those featuring Charisse. While not a major box office success, Sombrero aimed to showcase Mexican culture to American audiences with a blend of melodrama, romance, and music. Though its portrayals may feel dated by modern standards, the film remains a colorful relic of 1950s Hollywood attempts at international storytelling. Pickup category timeslot {A}
