Ornate Gold Frame is 38” x 28”.  There is no discernible signature but it is on a canvas, the plaque on the back is in French and was an advertisement for Alph Saint-Martin, a business located ‘A La Palette De Ruben’s’ near the Pont des Arts in Paris. This appears to be painted in the 18th century.

Maritime Sextant. Stadimeter, specifically a vintage U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships Stadimeter Mark 5, Model 0, manufactured by Schick, Incorporated during the WWII era. It&#39;s a nautical instrument used primarily for estimating the range or distance to an object of known height, such as another ship or a landmark. 
Key details about the Stadimeter:
Function: It measures the angle between the top and bottom of an object of known height (e.g., a ship&#39;s mast) and translates that angle into a distance reading.
Mechanism: Similar in principle to a sextant, it uses mirrors and a telescopic sight to align the top and bottom of the object, with adjustments made based on the object&#39;s known height.
Navigational Tool: It was a crucial tool for navigation officers aboard US warships for purposes like maintaining proper distance in formations and convoys, and for gunnery, especially when active radar use was not advisable or available.
Historical Significance: The Mark 5 version, developed during World War II, improved upon earlier models by using a faster-adjustable arc arm, making it more efficient for measuring multiple objects with differing heights.
Manufacturer: The example in the image and many others during that period were produced by Schick, Incorporated, a company more widely known for its razors.
