Lot #96: Antique Victorian Richards & Hartley Guardian Angel, Spooner and Tray

This Antique Victorian Richards & Hartley Guardian Angel, Venus and Cupid EAPG Flint Glass Pedestal Compote 1875-84 is in very good condition. It was a popular pattern in the late 1870s and the 1880s both in the United States and Canada. The pattern consists of oval cartouches, formed by a circle of ribbing and beading, containing a cameo image of Venus and Cupid. Connecting the cartouches is a geometric wave band. There is also a beaded rim around top of the compote. The glass has a strong bell sound consistent with flint glass and glows green under black light. It is in good condition with no cracks or chips. Can be used as a candy dish, fruit bowl or as an addition for the collection. It measures 7 in or 17.5 cms high Bowl is 6.5 in or 16.5 cms diameter Base is 4 in or 10 cms diameter Spooners or celery vases were popular during Victorian times for a well-set table included many special dishes and utensils for specific foods or used. Spooners were the most regularly utensil used at every sitting and tea time filled with your spoons. Today they can also be used for cranberry sauce, as a celery vase or add a spoon and your favourite candy or nuts and guests can serve themselves. Spooners are also very popular for sauces and dressing for a classy presentation. For a more modern twist use the spooner for your makeup, toothbrush or as a candle holder. They were usually made of heavy pressed glass in heavily detailed patterns and with double handles. This one fits as it has a heavy star imprinted base with cut circular pattern on bottom, vertical indented sections around middle and pressed XXX pattern near the top. It is finished off with 2 large handles. It does shoe some scratch marks from use but no chips or cracks. Add some candy or nuts or a set of spoons and would make a great Thanksgiving or Christmas gift for the hostess.
