"Slag glass" is a collectors' name for opaque pressed glass with coloured streaks, usually white and/or cream in the 1890's . Colours were achieved by adding slag from iron smelting works to the glass. The chemical obtained from iron works was pulverized silicate slag acquired by skimming the surface of molten iron during processing and pulverizing it after it cooled.in the 19th century, slag glass items were called by names such as "Marble glass", "Brown malachite" ,"mosaic glass". slag glass was used in Tiffany Lamps and to make many decorative objects. Today it is often used to make jewelry - pieces are literally chopped off the larger piece to be worked with. The opaque colours are the oldest, as the technique developed other colours and clarifications were introduced.
