About the artist

Chinese artist: Zhao Shuru (1874-1945)

Frame: 24.5"H x 22.5"W
Artist wrote: Written by Zhao Shuru in the summer of Bingyin year in the room where Qin, Han and Sui weighed. Stamped:Zhao Shu's Seal Very good condition. Please check photos for condition details. About the artist Born in Yin County, Zhejiang Province, Zhao Shuru was an expert in calligraphy and painting, as well as in the painting of flowers, insects, and horses, especially horses. He could be called the "Zhao Mengfu of the modern era." Zhao Shuru visited his father-in-law, Lin Yingshu's, and explored the collection of fine works. He devoted himself to studying the ancient relics of the Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, and diligently learned calligraphy and painting. Zhao Shuru excelled in painting horses, primarily inheriting the techniques of Li Gonglin of the Song Dynasty and Zhao Mengfu of the Yuan Dynasty, while also drawing on the Western techniques of the early Qing court painter Lang Shining, gradually developing his own style. Zhao Shuru painted no more than a hundred pieces in his lifetime, making him a relatively unprolific artist. However, his paintings, few in number, were exceptionally refined, earning him the nickname "one horse worth ten sceptres of gold." In 1930s Shanghai, Zhao Shuru's saddled horses, Wu Hufan's landscapes, Feng Chaoran's figures, and Wu Daiqiu's flowers were known as the "Four Masters." The landscapes, flowers, feathers, insects and grasses painted by Zhao Shuru are also interesting, focusing on form and breaking the stereotype. Zhao Shuru was a versatile calligrapher and painter. He made many friends, including Zhang Daqian of Sichuan and Gao Zhenxiao of Yinxian, two famous calligraphers of the time, who were happy to associate with him and respected him as a master of epigraphy. Sha Menghai wrote in "Shacun Yinhua" that "after three hundred years of continuous changes, the rapid development reached Wu Yuelao (Wu Changshuo) and the peaceful development reached Zhao Shulao (Zhao Shuru), which is truly breathtaking and unprecedented."
