Little wood houses created by the artist Shelia Thompson. Each house is patterned after an actual house in the United States. Shelf sitter. Kingscote Newport, Rhode Island Newport was founded in 1639 by religious dissidents from Massachusetts and became one of the most important ports on the East Coast. It wasn't until the Gilded Age, which began after the Civil War. that Newport became the seasonal nesting ground of millionaires who flocked north from Fifth Avenue each summer. Kingscote was built in the late 1830s, as a summer home by wealthy Savannah resident George Nobles Jones. The house was designed by Richard Upjohn, an English cabinetmaker who went on to become the most distinguished architect of Gothic Revival churches in America. In 1864, the house was acquired by William H. King. In the 1880s, it was enlarged by the firm of McKim. Mead. and White, who contributed the turreted addition at the rear of the house.
