Casson (Group of Seven) Silkscreen (Samson-Matthews Art-for-Schools Series, ca. 1948–1955) Unframed • Approx. 20 15 in (50 38 cm) Description: Original mid-century silkscreen print titled “Winter Morning” by Thoreau MacDonald, son of Group of Seven painter J. E. H. MacDonald. The work depicts a quiet rural scene of a horse feeding beside a snow-covered barn—one of MacDonald’s most beloved compositions of Canadian simplicity and restraint. This edition was part of the Samson-Matthews / National Gallery of Canada “Art for Schools” program, an educational initiative bringing fine Canadian art to classrooms and public buildings across the country. Each print in the series was supervised and approved by A. J. Casson (1898–1992) of the Group of Seven, whose printed facsimile signature appears lower right: “Supervised by A. J. Casson / Issued by the National Gallery of Canada.” The printing process—hand-pulled color silkscreen—was executed under Casson’s direction at the Samson-Matthews studio in Toronto, circa 1948–1955. Condition: Light overall toning and a few minor edge scuffs consistent with age; colors remain rich and unfaded. Lower margin intact with full printed text. Not framed.
