Lot #49: Lot of Four Chinese Antiques; Lacquer Basket, Rattan Sewing Basket, Glazed Tea Jar and Umbrella

A four item lot of Chinese antiques. 1) A red and black lacquer basket with handle. Very old but in excellent condition. Smells strongly of teak. Black and red. Measures . Top black portion has excised floral motifs. Measures 9" in diameter x 10" tall. 23 x 25.5 cm. 2) An antique traditional Chinese rattan wicker sewing basket. In very good condition. Lined with original cotton. Lid has Chinese coins, bangle, glass beads and silk tassels attached. 12'/ 25 cm. in diameter. These lidded baskets were popular in 1800s China, often filled with sewing notions and given as bridal gifts. Around 1880, they began being imported to the United States. The novelties attached to the cover were said to be tokens of good fortune. 3) An antique collapsible umbrella. Bamboo, waxed and lacquered paper. 27"/ 69 cm. in length. Highly decorative. No holes. 4) An antique hexagonal green glaze Shiwan stoneware commercial ginger jar with all important lid. What to look out for when shopping for an authentic antique Chinese ginger jar. The key factors in identifying a jar's value are its age, colour, rarity, condition – and a lid. Having the original lid makes a real difference to the price. Raised decoration with panels on sides depicting stages in growth of ginger and a nice Oriental style raised collar around the top opening. Truly a beautiful example.
