Framed photograph of a 1977 Lamborghini Cheetah prototype. The Cheetah was Lamborghini's first off-road vehicle prototype, developed for a U.S. military contract. It was built in San Jose, California, and featured a Chrysler 360 V8 engine mounted in the rear. The rear-engine placement led to poor handling characteristics, which contributed to the U.S. Army ultimately awarding the contract to another provider. Only one prototype was ever produced, which was later damaged during testing. Despite its failure, the Cheetah served as the inspiration for the later and more successful Lamborghini LM002 production vehicle, a forerunner of modern high-powered SUVs.
