Akabeko, a Traditional Japanese Folk Toy • This is an Akabeko, a traditional Japanese folk toy from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. • The name translates to "red cow" in the local dialect, and is made with papier- mâché in the representation of a bobblehead cow. • Akabeko toys are considered a symbol of good fortune and health, believed to ward off off smallpox and other illnesses. • This particular figurine is a variation called a Kin no Beko (0), or "Golden Cow," which is a traditional folk mascot from Iwate Prefecture, Japan. • In excellent condition, no breaks, cracks. or chips.
