SHEILA MAKI, Canadian, 1932-2021 - Mixed media silkscreen assemblage entitled “Was Jack Here?” Marked Artist’s proof, I, dated 1992. Signed titled, dated, and editioned in pencil at lower edge. Framed. 9.5 x 6 in (image); 18 x 15 in (frame). *** Sheila Maki was born in Sudbury and grew up in North Bay before moving to Toronto in 1969. She was a passionate artist and often worked in silkscreen and acrylic. Maki was a member of the Society of Etchers & Engravers, Society of Canadian Artists, Ontario Society of Artists, Print Council of Canada and The Heliconian Club. Noted art historian Joan Murray wrote about Maki in her 1994 catalogue for the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, “Spirit of Freedom: Original Prints and Mixed Media Works by Sheila Maki.” From the estate of ISABEL McLAUGHLIN (CM OOnt Canadian, 1903-2002), modernist painter and patron of the arts. *** Born in Oshawa, Ontario, McLaughlin was the third of five daughters to Adelaide Mowbray McLaughlin and founder of the McLaughlin Motor Car Company and first president of General Motors Canada, Col. Robert Samuel McLaughlin. She studied watercolour painting with Louise Saint in Paris while learning French at the Sorbonne in Paris (1921–1924). She studied at the Ontario College of Art under noted artists Arthur Lismer and Yvonne McKague Housser. In her career, she exhibited and befriended many renown artists including Paraskeva Clark and Hans Hofmann. A wonderful auction of fine art, photographs and paintings. This consignment auction contains authentic works by important artists. Also, rare prints by George Baxter from the world-famous collection sold at Ward-Prince Galleries in 1968 from formally from the collection of Walter H.
