NAHUM TSCHACBASOV, Russian-American, 1899-1984 - Original signed etching entitled “Flying Fish,” dated 1946, editioned 33/50. Signed, dated, titled, and editioned in pencil at lower edge. Framed. 8.5 x 11.5 in (image); 14.5 x 18.5 in (frame). *** Nahum Tschacbasov was born in Baku, Russia and was known for his printmaking and painting. His family fled Russia following the pogrom riots. He served in the US Navy from 1917 to 1919, following which he returned to Chicago to work as a businessman. He was originally an accountant and turned to painting in 1930. He became a member of “The Ten,” a group of New York-based artists founded to gain exposure for its members during the economic difficulty of the Great Depression, and also in response to the popularity of Regionalism which dominated the gallery space its members sought and included members Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko. Tschacbasov taught at the Art Students League of New York, a renown artist’s group. His work is held within the Smithsonian. A wonderful auction of fine art, photographs and paintings.
