Lot #5: Midtown Manhattan 3D Map

A true statement piece. This oversized mid-century map of Manhattan takes in the lower portion of Central Park and extends south to 12th St. All streets and avenues are indicated, and every building is shown in incredibly detailed axonometric perspective, with many labeled--who remembers Gimbels Department Store? Shore to shore view includes ships at their piers in the Hudson and East Rivers. The artist, Herman Bollman (1911-1971), created this map for the 1964 New York World's Fair, and worked from over 67,000 photos, taken from various sites around town and from the air. The cameras used were developed by Bollman and his team, and then they began the laborious process of hand-drawing the map over the photos. Bollman began his career as an engraver and woodcarver, and gained renown as a cartographer working especially with 3D axonometric views, as here. The version Bollman created was used as a guide, and came folded in a pouch, with insets on the reverse. This reproduction is printed in full color, somewhat faded here, with slight staining to lower corners, as shown. Matted in a linen matte, with a dark teal woven fabric frame.
