Lot #60: Mission-style Rocker Glider

Mission-style furniture became popular in the very early 1900s, and is easy to identify by its right angles, clean lines, rectangular spindles, and lack of ornamentation. It grew out of the Arts & Crafts movement, simplifying that style even further as a kind of revolt against the heavy, ornate furniture of the Victorian era. Joseph McHugh, a New England furniture craftsman, saw a chair in a Swedenborgian church in San Francisco and was inspired by its simple design, calling it (somewhat confusingly) Mission furniture, although it had nothing to do with the furniture of the old California missions. This repro rocker glider has narrowly set spindles forming the back rest and supporting the arm rests, with a spring seat and cushions covered in a generously-scaled floral print on deep red ground. Manufacturer Best Chairs Inc, now Best Home Furnishings, was begun by two friends with an intent to create affordable quality furniture.
