Lot #97: KLM Blue Delft House #93

Japanmuseum SieboldHuise (Japan Museum SieboldHuis); part of the on-going KLM/Bols series of gifts given to first-class passengers. During the 16th century, Rapenburg 19 was created by combining 4 buildings. Radical changes were made to the building two centuries later. In 1830, Philipp Granz von Siebold (1796-1866) returned to Leiden and brought objects he collected during his stay on the Japanese island Dejima. Two years later he moved to Rapenburg 19 where he dsiplayed his collection to the public. His 'Japansch Museum' was visited by many dignitaries, such as King Willem II of the Netherlands, Tsarevich Alexander of Russia and Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. in 2005, the building became the Japan Museum SieboldHuis. It also serves as the official Japan Centre, providing an impression of the scientific, cultural and economic relations between the Netherlands and Japan.
