"Heads and skulls were recurring images in Jean-Michel Basquiat's work, inspired by his childhood fascination with Gray's Anatomy. Given to him at age seven by his mother, the book sparked a lifelong interest in anatomy. 'Skull', 1981 was first shown at the Whitney Biennial in 1983, where at 22 years old Basquiat was one of the youngest artists ever to show at the iconic Biennial.
