Lot #6: Four Imari Plates

Classic and collectible, for good reason. The Imari patterns have a rich history steeped in Japanese culture and global trade, and have remained popular for over three centuries. Originating in the town of Arita on the island of Kyushu in the 17th century, Imari porcelain quickly gained popularity both domestically and internationally. Named after the port city of Imari, from where these exquisite wares were exported, the pattern typically features vibrant colors of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, green, with gilt accents, often depicting asian motifs such as flower gardens, and landscapes. Offered here, four colorful Japanese Imari plates celebrating this artform - three painted in underglaze blue and enamels with alternating panels of floral sprays and branches, around a central roundal of symbolic plants, fantastic birds and a phoenix, with floral sprays.
