Would look amazing with recovered lid, fresh coat of paint.  If I had the space, would do it in flat black paint, with a spectacular fabric cover on the hinged lid.
Hinges intact.   I think this is a perfect example of vintage is better.  These held the dirty laundry, but also made a seat to use while pulling on your socks and pants.  And the lid allows some privacy for the dirty undies in there.
