This makes it very difficult to photograph and I apologize for the glare. signed: "I. W. KINGSAN KELIKI BALI" I.W. Kingsan (often listed as I.W. Kingsan or I W Kingsan) is a Balinese artist recognized for producing vintage Balinese paintings, including depictions of "Balinese dance" and scenes marked with "Keliki Bali". These works are often associated with the mid-20th century, capturing traditional Balinese culture and frequently found in vintage art markets and collections.  For collectors, these paintings are often categorized as vintage Indonesian art.  Cultural and Historical Significance The Keliki painting tradition, initiated by farmer I Ketut Sana in the 1970s, is a fascinating response to the rise of tourism in Bali. This art form, one of Indonesia's five recognized styles, provides a captivating window into Balinese culture with its intricate portrayals of daily life, nature, and folklore. The Keliki Painting School is a testament to this rich cultural heritage, preserving the 'Style Keliki' variant of traditional Balinese miniature painting. Themes range from religious figures like Sarasvati and Rama and Sita to nature and ritual dances, maintaining authenticity while drawing inspiration from the ancient miniaturist school of Batuan. Artistic Techniques Keliki paintings are celebrated for their rich gradations and meticulous detail, achieved through the use of Chinese ink on paper. This art form demands hours of focused concentration, resulting in stunning pieces that embody Balinese beauty and tradition. Artists at Keliki employ finely sharpened coconut branch styluses and modern tools like Rothring tips to create intricate designs. Shading is done with brushes and Chinese ink, while acrylics are used for flat colors and gradients, showcasing a harmonious blend of traditional and modern techniques. Cultural Significance Emerging in the 1970s, the Keliki painting style is a beautiful memento for visitors, capturing the essence of Bali's rural life, flora, fauna, and Hindu myths. Its rich gradations and extreme detail require hours of concentration, making it a revered art form in Balinese culture. This style not only reflects the island's vibrant traditions but also serves as a unique souvenir for those exploring Bali's artistic heritage.
