Mr. Rickard was among the last Canadian survivors of the Dieppe Raid during the Second World War. It was one of the darkest chapters in Canada’s military history, but it was also marked by great courage and helped lead to important lessons to prepare for the D-Day invasion of 1944.

Douglas Ross Rickard was a member of the Royal Canadian Corp of Signals. He arrived at Dieppe in the early morning of Aug. 19, 1942, aboard a tank landing craft (TLC) containing three tanks. He was knocked unconscious by a shell blast but was revived by an officer and continued to receive and transmit messages until further damage to the vessel disabled an engine and forced the crew to retreat.  With only one propeller working, they slowly tried to return to Britain. They were set upon by enemy fighters off the coast of England, and to avoid injury, Corporal Rickard jumped overboard. He was able to remove his heavy boots and swam over a kilometre back to an English beach and safety.
 
Corporal Rickard continued to serve the remainder of the war in a variety of roles, returning to Canada in early 1946 with his British war bride, Jean. Already an accomplished artist, he continued his painting and held art director positions with several major publications, including Maclean’s magazine. Before retirement, he established several Canadian companies which exported Canadian photographic equipment and art supplies around the world.

In recognition of his service, Corporal Rickard was awarded the 1939 to 1945 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 with Dieppe Bar and, in 2021, received the French Legion of Honour Medal.

Alfred Jones (1819-1900) was born in Liverpool, England, on 7 April 1819. When he was 15, he emigrated to the United States with his family. He attended the National Academy of Design in New York, and in 1839, after having secured first prize at the Academy, he served an apprenticeship in banknote engraving at Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson in Hudson, New York. He also started attending evening classes in the evening, at the National Academy.

Tony&#39;s artistic interests developed early. He received formal training at Jean Turner Art School in San Francisco, from various artists in the Bay area and was inspired by years of his international and domestic travels. As an author and illustrator he was first published in the San Jose Mercury News at age fifteen. His books include &#34;Rambling through Baja California with Pen and Brush,&#34; &#34;Tony&#39;s Guide to Better Painting,&#34; Santa Clara Valley, an Atrist&#39;s View,&#34; &#34;The Saints of California Landscape,&#34; and &#34;How I found Peace, Joy and Happiness in a World of Insanity.&#34;

His paintings have appeared in numerous museums and private collections throughout the world including, San Jose, Lake Tahoe, Colorado Springs, Australia, Mexico, and Italy. He was the proud owner of his own &#34;Mini Art Gallary&#34; in san Jose California for a number of years. One of his most precious works was his mural of the Resurrection at Holy Cross Catholic Church in San Jose California.

Tony was a member of many organizations throughout his life, including The Third Order of Saint Francis, Knights of Columbus, Cupertino Fine Arts League, San Jose Art League, Saint Michael&#39;s Fraternity at Mission San Miguel. He honored his vows as a Lay Order Franciscan for 55 years. He won the &#34;people&#39;s Choice Award 13th Edition of who&#39;s Who in California.&#34; He worked for over 20 years at Nasa/Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. He proudly served his country in World War II in the Army Medical Core.

French Art Deco Dage Pottery Table Lamp c.1920s

Sound clean intact works fine   19.5" x 5"He was born in 1885 in Lille and died in 1963 in Saint-Sever. His career took place first in the North of France (Fives-Lille, Nimy in Belgium, Billancourt, Antony) then in Saint-Sever. In 1920 he founded the Faïencerie d'Art d'Antony (95), associated with EugèneVal, an important member of the ceramics and glassmaking union, where he collaborated with:
Jean de La Fontinelle (animal decoration specialist),
André Villien (a vase signed by the two men attests to this), •
Georges Cassin (between 1936 and 1937 he worked at the national factory in Sèvres then at the Boch factory in Belgium).
Louis Dage supplies the “Pomone” art workshop of the “Au bon marche” department store. He was “best worker in France” in 1925. Around 1934, he participated in the fitting out of the Normandy liner. In 1935, the Antony Art Faïencerie company was dissolved.
