Brilliantly colored group of carved wood and papier mache masks. The largest is wood and features cobras beside and above a demon's face, all in detailed polychrome. From Sri Lanka, this mask is known as Naga Raksha, or Cobra Mask, and was used in traditional folk dances, also symbolizing protection from evil. One side piece needs to be re-attached, as shown--break will not show from front once repaired. A pair of large papier mache Chinese masks, excellent condition. These masks are based on the makeup used in Chinese opera, and the colors carry symbolic meaning: blue indicates toughness and reliability; red indicates loyalty and courage. The Balinese wood and paper mask is likely Barong, the symbol of health and good fortune. Finally, the carved wood monkey mask, with white face and huge black and red features, a Saru (monkey) mask from the Japanese theater tradition. Monkeys are an animal of the zodiac, and represent curiosity and intelligence. We've included a coffee-table sized book, titled--appropriately--"Mask," by photographer Chris Rainier. Many color and black and white images, with background information on masks from around the world. A gorgeous volume and indispensable research resource. Dimensions: 6" - 24"W X 9" - 20"H Pickup category timeslot {B}
