Lot #37: Seafaring Collectibles, including Leonard Craske Bookend

A nautical miscellany, highlighted by a single tillerman bookend, stamped Leonard Craske, JB 2653. Jennings Brothers, a CT foundry, produced this gilt bronze piece modeled after the Fishermen's Memorial in Gloucester, which was designed by sculptor Leonard Craske (1882–1950). The statue, Craske's signature piece, was created after extensive time spent with Gloucester's fishermen, at sea and on shore, and also direct input from them as to the design, which was at first thought to look more like a well-heeled yachtsman than a working mariner. Craske, originally from London, was a multi-talented artist--a draftsman, photographer, actor, with a background in medical studies and various sciences. He was also known as the life of the party in the Rocky Nook artists' colony during the 1920s and 30s. His work may be seen at the Cape Ann Museum, and at various sites around New England. This lot also includes cast iron mermaids, a vintage brass and wood spyglass, a carved wood stick mimicking a bird's claw, decorative but functional brass portholes, brass easel-style sailboat from Penco, small copper light with fresnel-style lens, untested, and more.
