Lot #26: Roseville Pottery "Water Lily" and "Donatello" Pieces

Two pieces from highly collectible Roseville Pottery, both in excellent condition. The vintage Blue Water Lily vase has triangular double handles, and floats creamy water lily blossoms and leaves over soft ciel blue with horizontally incised marks to mimic water. This pattern was introduced in 1943, and the relief markings on the underside, Roseville U.S.A. 77-8", date it to the mid-late 1940s. The antique brown and cream Donatello bowl is decorated with cherubs alternating with sheltering trees all around, with pale green fluting around the base. This bowl is somewhat unusual in the rim is plain, rather than repeating the fluting on the bottom, as in most examples we've seen. The Donatello line was introduced in 1915-6; see Rv inked underglaze marking on bottom, in use from 1910-1927, dating this to the early 1920s. Some crazing, as expected in a piece of this age. Roseville Pottery was founded in Roseville, Ohio, in 1890. In the next couple of decades, it acquired several other potteries, and by the turn of the century had four plants and 325 employees. Highly successful until imported reproductions began to undermine sales, the pottery sold in 1954 and ended production of all Roseville lines.
