Lot #121: Vintage Del Monte Promotional Tin Can Banks – Set of 6

While cleaning out a storage locker, I found a sealed, which I opened, box of Vintage Del Monte Promotional Tin Can Banks – Set of 6. These banks carry a special historical significance beyond typical advertising memorabilia. As noted on the included yellow insert, they were "Fabricated by the Disabled" at the Village of Progress, Inc. in Oregon, Illinois. Historically, The Village of Progress is a private non-profit (founded in 1969) that provides vocational training and employment for adults with developmental disabilities. These banks represent a successful historical collaboration between a major American corporation (Del Monte) and a community-based vocational center. The condition of the banks is excellent and they are "still" banks; they are traditionally opened with a can opener once full, or by carefully shaking coins back through the slot.
