Philip Stewart Charis was not a painter in the traditional sense, but a world-renowned fine-art portrait photographer whose work was so painterly and classical that it is often mistaken for painted portraiture. His life-size, museum-style portraits were inspired by Old Masters like Rembrandt, Gainsborough, and Sargent, and he spent over 60 years shaping the world of formal portraiture.
