Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and decorative facsimile signature design to front cover. Approx. 11” x 9” x 2” Contains numerous full-page illustrations of notable 19th century literary figures, originally drawn by Daniel Maclise and accompanied by text by William Maginn. Edited by William Bates. Provenance: From the library of Thomas Steele Dodgson (1856–1920), British heraldist, historian, bibliophile, and former British Museum staff member. His illustrated armorial bookplate appears inside the front board, bearing the motto “Cavende Leonis Ungulae.” Rebound by Beasley in April 1994. Condition consistent with age.
