This coin is a 1942 Canadian 5-cent piece, specifically the "Tombac" variety. While traditionally called a nickel, these 1942 coins were made from a brass alloy called tombac (88% copper, 12% zinc) to conserve nickel for the World War II effort. Key Features Design: The reverse features an iconic beaver, a design introduced in 1937. The obverse (not shown) depicts King George VI. Shape: It has a unique 12-sided (dodecagonal) shape. This was done to help people distinguish it from the bronze 1-cent coin, as their colors were similar. Composition: Due to war demands, two versions of the 5-cent coin were minted in 1942: the standard nickel version and this brownish tombac version. Market Value The value of a 1942 Tombac nickel depends heavily on its condition (grade).   Pickup category timeslot {A}
