1) The Comfort Women, Japan's brutal regime of enforced prostitution in the second World War, by Georg Hicks. The victims tell their own stories. Over 100,000 women were forced into prostitution and even in 1993, the Japanese government continued to deny this wartime truth and deny the women reparations. The book recounts how the Japanese organized and ran brothels in conquered territories, kidnapped or mislead women into serving at them. 303 pages, 1997, softcover. 2) Imperial Woman by Pearl S Buck. The amazing story of Tzu Hsi, who rose from concubine status to become the working head of the Qing Dynasty. Born from a humble background, Tzu Hsi falls in love with her cousin Jung Lu, a handsome guard—but while still a teenager she is selected, along with her sister and hundreds of other girls, for relocation to the Forbidden City. 376 pages, bought in 1980, hardcover. 3) Hirohito, Emperor of Japan by Leonard Mosley. Full length biography including questions re his role in WWII, behind-the-scenes politics and decisions leading to Pearl Harbour, General MacArthur's relationship with the Emperor and a study of the Japanese people before, during and after the war. 371 pages, printed 1966, hardcover with dust jacket. 4) Geisha by Liza Dalby. American Liza learnt Japanese and went to live in Japan to learn about the geisha way of life. She explores different areas of Japan as geisha have different actions in different areas and explores the history of geisha life. 347 pages, 1983, hardcover with dust jacket.
