William Baron of Barnstaple "Puzzle Jug" • These jugs were created by William Baron, a notable potter who originally worked for C.H. Brannam in Barnstaple. • Made of glazed earthenware or pottery, often featuring a distinctive mottled "powder blue" or "cobalt blue" finish. • An identical jug marked "Baron Barnstaple 281" is held in the collection of the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon, where it is dated to approximately 1930. "This jug was made to try your skill / Drink if you can, but do not spill." • Incised on base 'Baron Barnstaple 281', which refers to both the shape of the puzzle jug, and the motto on the jug. • In excellent condition, no breaks, or chips.
