Lot #39: Lot of 4 — 1970 Manitoba Centennial Thompson Lions Club Trade Dollar Coins — Canadian Numismatic Collectibles

A lovely little set of Canadian numismatic history — four 1970 Manitoba Centennial trade dollars issued by the Thompson, Manitoba Lions Club to mark the 100th anniversary of Manitoba joining Confederation (1870–1970). The obverse features the outline map of Manitoba with "MANITOBA CENTENNIAL / 1870–1970." The reverse depicts the iconic INCO nickel processing facility at Thompson — the industry that built the city — surrounded by "THOMPSON MANITOBA / LIONS DOLLAR" with the notation "VALUE ONE DOLLAR / EXPIRES OCT. 31, 1970." These Lions Club trade dollars were a beloved Canadian tradition through the mid-20th century, issued by service clubs across the country and accepted as one-dollar currency at participating local businesses during centennial and jubilee celebrations. They were collected as souvenirs almost immediately, making surviving examples in good condition increasingly scarce over 55 years. All four coins are housed in individual protective plastic sleeves and appear to be in very good to excellent condition with minimal wear. A wonderful piece of Manitoba and Canadian small-town history — appealing to coin collectors, Manitoba history enthusiasts, Lions Club memorabilia collectors, and Thompson locals alike.
