A commanding and beautifully executed piece of stone carving, this large reclining rhinoceros is sure to turn heads. Carved from what appears to be soapstone or serpentine, the sculpture displays a warm grey-green palette with striking natural pink and rose veining running through the stone — no two pieces like this are ever identical. The rhino is depicted at rest on an organically shaped integrated base, with impressive attention to detail throughout — from the expressive facial features and layered skin folds to the upright horn and alert ears. The carving is confident and fluid, consistent with the long tradition of African stone sculpture, particularly the work associated with Zimbabwean Shona carvers who have produced internationally collected works in this style.
