While cleaning out a storage locker, I found in a box wrapped in bag a WWII USS Pittsburgh (CA-72) Archive - 1945 "Pitt Log" Newsletter, Photos & Insignia. The lot consists of – • USS Pittsburgh & The "Big Ben" Rescue: The Pittsburgh earned legendary status for its role on March 19, 1945, when it saved the USS Franklin (CV-13). After the carrier was devastated by Japanese air attacks, the Pittsburgh took the flaming, dead-in-the-water vessel into tow—a feat of seamanship that saved thousands of lives. • The "Pitt Log" Newsletter (June 4, 1945): A fascinating piece of military ephemera, this newsletter provides a "time capsule" look at crew morale, news from home, and the ship's official narrative shortly before it famously lost its bow in a massive typhoon on June 5, 1945. • Original WWII Photography: Includes candid snapshots and official-style views of naval operations. Note the image of the ship's wake and the close-ups of sailors, which capture the daily reality of the Pacific campaign. • Service Memorabilia: The collection includes a U.S. Navy Rating Badge (Petty Officer 2nd Class, Engineman), identifiable by the eagle ("crow") and the gear specialty mark. The condition of the items above shows authentic age-related wear, including some toning and minor creasing on the documents, which adds to their provenance and character. The newsletter remains legible and intact. This lot would be excellent for a WWII historian, a collector of military memorabilia or a reseller. Refer to the photographs for further detail.
