This is my favourite thing in the auction and the hardest to part with. But my loss is hopefully your gain. 

This is two (one facing forwards, one backwards) paintings attributed on the back to famous Quebecois artist Alfred Pellan. Now a bit of storytime. Alfred Pellan left Quebec to study art in France in 1926. Pellan stayed in France until the lead up to WW2 then returned to Quebec. Leaving behind a large amount of works in France. And while Pellan&#39;s works upon returning to Quebec are prolific, pieces from the time period (1925-1930) referenced on the back are few and far between because many were left behind to WW2 France and lost to time.

A lot of Pellan&#39;s pieces look different from this one, because a lot of them are from after returning from France. But one known, contemporary piece, Bain, Aukleden from 1936 is strikingly similar. A picture of it can be found here: https://artvalue.ca/artwork/Alfred-Pellan/Bain-Aukleden/230432428133/

Now let&#39;s talk pictures 6-10. Picture 6 is is a book about Pellan&#39;s life and works. Picture 7 is a picture from that book of Pellan&#39;s studio in France in 1931, with a red square. Picture 8 is a zoom in of that red square. Picture 9 is that zoom in showing the hand (red), arm/elbow (blue) and back of chair (yellow) of the painting. And then picture 10 shows those same features in the painting in this auction. There is a better quality version of the photo in the MNBAQ archieves in Quebec City if someone wants to go look at it. And I have spoken to someone (not at MNBAQ) who has access to the better quality picture and sees the same thing. One thing I have not done out of pure fear of damaging something was remove the painting from the frame, and/or remove the painting from the stretcher. So someone would need to do so to confirm the back of the chair is hidden by the stretcher. But as much as I could see by shining a light under it, it&#39;s there.

Pictures 11-13 appear to show that it was shown somewhere at some point. There are labels on the frame, if not partially removed. There&#39;s what appears to be either a accession number, or a lot number written on the frame &#34;a4934&#34; or &#34;a4954&#34;.

You can have all my research notes into the painting, you can have the book with the picture of it in Pellan&#39;s studio. You can have all the materials I used to track down the previous owners and hopefully you will have better luck finishing the research than I did. Unfortunately moving prevents me from taking it with me across the country to continue the work.
