Lot #51: Rare Norval Morrisseau "Maymaywaysiwak" print. Signed, numbered

The numbered print 34/49 is by the celebrated Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau, also known by his Ojibwe name, Copper Thunderbird. This print is titled "Maymaywaysiwak". The silkscreen on paper is floated in the frame to fully enjoy the size and nature of this work. Norval Morrisseau (1931–2007) was the founder of the Woodland School of Art, a style that introduced a modern approach to traditional Ojibwe pictographs and legends. His work is characterized by bold, thick black outlines and vibrant colors, often compared to stained glass windows. He is widely regarded as the "Picasso of the North". Morrisseau's art typically depicts mythical tableaux, legends of his people, spirit-beings, and the cultural tensions between Indigenous and European traditions. He is considered one of Canada's most important Indigenous artists and was the first Indigenous artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.
