For the traveler, whether in real time or while comfortably curled up in an armchair. The large 16" globe has a heavy metal base, and some areas of damage, plus a boatload of historic fascination. Geographer Almon Ernest Parkins, 1879-1940, is credited with editing this edition. Parkins was a teacher, later professor, served as president of several associations of geographers, and wrote about various aspects of geography, including historic, economic, and political. This globe was produced by the firm founded by brothers William, 1802-1888, and Alexander Keith Johnston, 1804-1871, of Edinburgh. Alexander was another renowned geographer and also a cartographer, whose wanderings as a hiker in Scotland had brought home to him the need for reliable maps. His 30" globe won numerous medals and led to a royal appointment, which gave them the right to display their logo within a cartouche adorned with the royal coat of arms. Their globes were also produced in the U.S. by several firms, among them A.J. Nystrom of Chicago, maker of this piece. A metal dial under the meridian at top can be spun to divide the globe into day and night, and we believe the full meridian is bronze. The patches are souvenir pieces intended to be either sewn to clothing or a pack, or displayed as here, framed under glass. Patches are embroidered, or printed on canvas, with one printed on card. These date to the mid 1900s, and represent towns in the former Yugoslavia, as well as Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, and France. Very good condition. Dimensions: globe 14"D base X 25"H, badges 10.75" X 13.75" Pickup category timeslot {C}
