Rare French Revolutionary Twelve Deniers (One Sol) Coin from Year 4 of the Revolution (1792) with rare Royal Portrait as of King of the French (“Roi de François”). Louis XVI was King of France (“Roi de France”) from 1774 to September 1791, when the Revolutionary Council gave him the more populist and republican title of “King of the French” (“Roi de Français”). Louis was then arrested in September 1792, and guillotined in January 1793. This Twelve Denier coin was issued in Year 4 (1792), with the even rarer spelling “Roi de François”. “(o”, not “a”). The Obverse shows a bust of LOUIS XVI draped to the left, bareheaded, hair tied. Lettering: LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANCOIS . (“Louis XVI King of the French”). The Reverse shows the Fasces (symbol of government) topped with a Phrygian cap (symbol of liberty and the French Revolution) between two oak branches. Lettering: LA NATION LA LOI LE ROI 12 D (“The Nation. The Law. The King. Twelve Deniers”). The Date once is given twice: in both the Gregorian and Revolutionary Calendars. The last digit of the date in the Gregorian Calendar (1792) is somewhat obscured. But the date in the French Revolutionary Calendar is legible as “L’AN 4 DE LA LIB”. (Year Four of the Liberty).
