New York: Harmony Books, Crown Publishers, 1977. "The Comic Book Price Guide 1977–1978" (officially Volume 7) is a seminal reference work by the legendary numismatist and historian Robert M. Overstreet, published in 1977 by Overstreet Publications. This edition represents a pivotal moment in the formalization of the comic book marketplace, as it was one of the first to provide a standardized, data-driven framework for valuing thousands of titles ranging from the Victorian Age (pre-1900) to the "Modern" Bronze Age of the late 1970s. Overstreet is credited with introducing the professional grading scales that are still in use today—defining the specific criteria for "Mint," "Fine," and "Good" conditions—and his annual guides became the "Bible" for the industry, moving the hobby away from informal trading and toward a sophisticated investment market. The cover of the 1977 seventh edition features a classic Golden Age Porky Pig dressed as a Canadian Mountie painted by Disney Artist Carl Barks. It includes a Carl Barks cover and 14 page gallery of his paintings, as well as a biographical essey. This volume is prized by historians for its snapshot of the market just before the "Direct Market" explosion of the 1980s, documenting a time when a copy of Action Comics #1 in top condition was valued at a then-shocking 5,000. Because of its historical significance to the hobby, the 1977 Overstreet first printing in Fine condition generally trades between 40 and 60, while a Very Fine specimen can reach 85 to 120.
