Olive Cloth, Red and Black Pictorial Cover. Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1927. 119 pp. "The Adventures of Poor Mrs. Quack" is a classic children’s animal story by the celebrated naturalist Thornton W. Burgess, the seventeenth volume in his popular Bedtime Story-Books series. The narrative follows the impulsive and boastful Chatterer as he learns the hard lessons of the Green Forest, specifically the dangers of curiosity and the importance of heedfulness when dealing with predators like Shadow the Weasel. Burgess used this story to teach young readers about the natural behaviors of squirrels—such as their territorial nature and food-storing habits—while maintaining a whimsical, anthropomorphic tone that became a hallmark of early 20th-century children's literature.
