Obverse: An idealized "Laureate Head" portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, laurel wreath in her hair. designed by Leonard C. Wyon. The inscription reads “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA. CANADA.” (“Victoria, by grace of God, Queen”) Reverse: The denomination “ONE CENT” and the date “1859” are centered within a beaded circle. Encircling this is a continuous chain of 16 maple leaves on a vine—a design known to collectors as the "Provincial Leaves" reverse. This coin is a cornerstone of any Canadian collection. Known as the "Large Cent," it was the last penny issued for the United Province of Canada before the 1867 Confederation created the modern nation. Unlike later Canadian pennies, this 1859 issue was significantly lighter (4.54g compared to the later 5.67g standard). It was produced at the Royal Mint in London to establish the decimal system in the province. (Thus, the decimal "cent" (one hundredth), and not the previous British "penny"). Because the harder bronze alloy caused the steel dies to wear down rapidly, the 1859 cent is famous for having over 400 minor die varieties. This example is hold over the Queen's head, likely to wear as a medallion or necklace. Dimensions: Bronze coin. 25.4 mm. 4.54 g Pickup category timeslot {A}
