Lot #442: 1951 Canada Five Cent Coin - George VI (Standard Beaver) - Chrome-plated Steel

Starting bidding

$1.00

Time Remaining:

Bidding starts in 0d 1h 3m

Obverse: Features the "Uncrowned Portrait" of King George VI facing left. Inscribed GEORGIVS VI D: G: REX ET IND: IMP: (George VI, by the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India). Reverse: The iconic Canadian beaver resting on a log, flanked by the date 1951. The denomination 5 CENTS is at the top, and CANADA is at the base. Struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa. This was the final year that the title "IND: IMP" (Emperor of India) appeared on Canadian coinage for King George VI, as India had achieved independence. It also marks the last full year of George VI's reign before the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. The 1951 "Beaver" nickel is an interesting study in material science and minting history. While the 1751–1951 Commemorative Nickel (featuring a refinery) is often more famous, the Standard Beaver design struck in steel is actually the scarcer of the two 1951 issues, making it a key focus for date-set collectors. Due to the outbreak of the Korean War, nickel was once again designated as a strategic war metal. Consequently, the Mint reverted to the wartime practice of using chrome-plated steel for five-cent pieces. Dimensions: Chrome-plated Steel. 21.21 mm. 4.54 g. Shape: 12-sided (Dodecagonal).
