Lot #444: 1947 Canada Five Cent Coin - George VI "Emperor of India" with "Maple Leaf" Five Cents

Starting bidding

$1.00

Time Remaining:

Bidding starts in 0d 1h 3m

Obverse: Features the "Uncrowned Portrait" of King George VI facing left. The inscription includes GEORGIVS VI D: G: REX ET IND: IMP: (George VI, by the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India). Reverse: The standard Beaver design by G.E. Kruger-Gray, with the date 1947 followed by a tiny Maple Leaf symbol. The denomination 5 CENTS is at the top, and CANADA is at the base. The 1947 "Maple Leaf" five-cent piece is one of the most famous and sought-after "emergency" varieties in Canadian numismatics. It was born out of a fascinating bureaucratic delay caused by the shifting borders of the British Empire. After India gained independence in August 1947, the title "Emperor of India" (IND: IMP) on the King’s portrait became obsolete. However, while the Royal Canadian Mint waited for new 1948 dies to arrive from London with the corrected titles, demand for coinage spiked. This led to the "Maple Leaf" solution used on this unique coin: Although this coin was actually struck in 1948, the Mint used the old 1947 dies but punched a small maple leaf next to the date (visible on this coin). This signifies that this coin was actually struck in 1948, but using the 1947 design. Dimensions: Nickel Coin. 21.21 mm. 4.54 g. Shape: 12-sided (Dodecagonal). Pickup category timeslot {A}
