Obverse: Features the "Uncrowned Portrait" of King George VI facing left. The inscription reads GEORGIVS VI D: G: REX ET IND: IMP: (George VI, by the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India). Reverse: Depicts a stylized nickel refinery with three tall smokestacks, designed by Stephen Trenka. Inscribed NICKEL 1751-1951 at the top. The word CANADA is at the base, and the denomination 5 CENTS is flanked by two maple leaves. This is one of the most visually distinct coins in the Canadian five-cent series. Released to celebrate a major milestone in the country’s industrial history, it replaced the traditional beaver design for a single year. This commemorative issue marks the 200th anniversary of the isolation of the element nickel by Swedish chemist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt in 1751. As Canada was the world’s leading producer of nickel at the time, the refinery was chosen as a symbol of national economic strength. This was a "dual-metal" year. While most of these commemoratives were struck in 100% Nickel, a shortage caused by the Korean War led to some 1951 nickels (primarily the standard beaver design) being struck in chrome-plated steel. Dimensions: 100% Nickel Coin. 21.21 mm. 4.54 g. Shape: 12-sided (Dodecagonal). Pickup category timeslot {A}
