Lot #449: 2002 Canada Ten Cent Coin - Queen Elizabeth II (Golden Jubilee 1952-2002)

Starting bidding

$1.00

Time Remaining:

Bidding starts in 0d 1h 44m

Obverse: Features the "Second Portrait" of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. However, unlike standard years, the date 2002 is moved to the obverse, appearing to the left of the Queen's neck. The inscription includes ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA. Reverse: The classic Bluenose schooner, designed by Emanuel Hahn. Notably, the standard date position is replaced by the commemorative years 1952-2002. The denomination 10 CENTS and CANADA remain in their traditional positions. Struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg. The 2002 ten-cent piece is a significant issue for collectors of the modern era, as it contains a one-year-only design change to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne, and thus commemorates the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Because the 2002 date was moved to the obverse to accommodate the jubilee dates on the reverse, it creates a unique "dual-dated" appearance that is distinct from standard dimes. This 2002 coin was the last year the Arnold Machin "Second Portrait" was used on the dime before the transition to the P.W. Moore "Old Head" portrait in 2003. This coin displays an unusual small "P" composition mark below the Queen's portrait, indicating the coin is made of plated steel. Dimensions: Nickel-plated Steel. 18.03 mm. 1.75 g.
