Obverse: Features a detailed depiction of an early North-West Mounted Police officer on horseback, dressed in the traditional 19th-century uniform. In the background, a stylized prairie horizon is visible. The full inscription reads RCMP CENTENNIAL / 1873-1973 / REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN / CANADA. Reverse: Features the official "Buffalo Days" logo used during the 1970s, which showcases a stylized, aggressive-looking buffalo head (bison). The design is surrounded by the event details. The full inscription reads BUFFALO DAYS / REGINA / VALUE 1.00 IN REGINA / EXPIRES SEPT. 30, 1973. The 1973 "Buffalo Days" token is one of the most historically significant issues in the Regina municipal series. It was struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), the precursor to the modern Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which has its historic training academy based in Regina. Struck for the Regina Chamber of Commerce as part of the annual "Buffalo Days" exhibition and festival. 1973 was a major year for the city, as Regina is the "home" of the RCMP's Depot Division. These tokens were used as local currency throughout the city during the summer festivities. The NWMP was established in 1873 to bring law and order to the North-West Territories. Because the RCMP's national training headquarters is located in Regina, this token is considered a primary collectible for both municipal token enthusiasts and RCMP memorabilia collectors.
