Lot #487: Rare 1951 Hull Transport Token Coin - One Fare - Transport Urbain de Hull - Hull Gatineau Quebec

Obverse: Features the name of the transit authority encircling the central "H" cutout. The lettering is set in a bold, sans-serif typeface designed for high legibility in low-light transit environments. The full inscription reads TRANSPORT URBAIN DE HULL. ("Hull Urban Transport") Reverse: Indicates the functional value of the token. Like the obverse, the text follows the circular rim around the "H" cutout. The full inscription reads BON POUR UN PASSAGE. ("Good for one Fare") Issued by the Transport Urbain de Hull, which managed the bus and transit networks in the Hull-Gatineau area. The "H" cutout served two purposes: it allowed for easy tactile identification for passengers reaching into pockets or purses, and it prevented the tokens from being used in machines designed for standard-sized coins or other cities' transit systems. This 1851 token dates to a period of significant growth in the Outaouais region. Transit tokens like these were eventually phased out as the system modernized and integrated with the broader STO (Société de transport de l'Outaouais) network.
